Abbott's internship program is rated as one of the top in the US. The pay was great and the internship program has some pretty sweet perks. However the internship placement can be hit or miss. I felt that I was placed in an area that was pretty much a waste of my summer. I wish they would have placed me on an assignment that was more relevant to my field of study. Overall the pay was great, and they even put me up in a hotel during my entire stay. The internship hiring team was a bit disorganized at times and had problems coordinating and sending out invitations to various intern events.
Another downside is that the place is huge. The Abbott campus(es) is a sprawling giant, and everybody works in dated fabric cubicles, it was a bit depressing. Also the place is way way up north, far away from anything. On the weekends, the town is dead. I had to escape to Chicago to get away from the area.
You might may or may not get a good internship assignment. If you are out-of-state or over 30 miles away (I believe), you qualify to be put up in a hotel. They even pay to fly you in from out of state and some interns even had a limo pick them up. The hotel served free bkfst and dinners, but the food wasn't that great. Overall the place was way too big and conservative. Most of the employees were overweight, married, mid-western suburbanites who drove mini vans and SUVs to work.
