As a car salesman here you have to be competitive to get in front of customers. When a customer (called an "up") arrives you have to be on your toes and get to him before any of the other salespeople do. There is no system in place to rotate ups amongst salespeople. Unfortunately there aren't too many ups during a normal day, so you spend most of your time hanging out on the showroom floor, because if you're in the back office making phone calls you might miss out on one. You're doing ok if you get 4 ups in one day.
IRA has a very good sales training program - something that should be useful for any other job in the future.
Full Commission. If you don't sell anything in a certain week, you get $10/hour, but when you sell a lot the following week, you have to pay that back. You normally make $200 for each new car you sell and about $200 to $600 for each used car. There are monthly promotions that can increase your wage. A good salesperson will sell about 20 cars/month. More used cars are sold than new cars.
