WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working at Michaels:

Working for Michaels was my first job after taking four years off. It was the one place I was hoping to land the job, and the one place that even bothered to give me an interview. Overnight freight stocking is typically a 6 hour shift for all associates (about 8-9 people), and one supervisor, and we just have to stock as much as we possibly can in that time period. In the 7 months I've been there so far, I can only recall 2 bad truck days, where stocking was slow and the backroom still had too much left in it when our shifts ending. Needless to say, they were on our butts the next week about being sure it doesn't happen again. Occasionally, we will get understaffed by one or two people who may call in sick or have been fired, or we get a much larger truck than we were prepared for, and it's expected that we won't get our usual amount done. Other than that, RDQs and planogram are more of a breeze to perform. The supervisor and manager are always extremely helpful and nice. Although the pay is the lowest possible ( minimum wage), it's still a great place to work if you like to be on your feet all day, and I'll be really sad when I have to leave this place in a year or two.

Michaels Salary and Benefits:

Pros: laid back; early morning hours (3-5am) that end by 10:30am, leave plenty of time in the day to do other things or have a second job; employee discount(s).
Cons: no benefits; sometimes you will get only a week with 10 hours, while other weeks you could get as much as 26 hours; low pay.

Working at Michaels:

*Note: i m sure every Michaels stores are different, this is just MY experience at THIS particular store.
Working at Michaels (my first job) truly opened my eyes to the retail business. Starting out was pretty good, i immediately loved my co-workers, they were funny, reliable, and certainly made it easier to get through the day. The assistant managers are also very nice and easy to work with.
Training took only 2 days, although i wouldnt exactly call it training. It consisted of watch about 3 30min-1hr long videos, that were a bit outdated (80's). You're tipical "training" video. After that just signing some paperwork and you were done. The interview was just as simple, in fact i wasnt asked my questions at all, mostly "When can you start?"
The work started out okay... putting carts of items away in their proper places, helping customers on the floor, ringing up a few customers here and there. Work was good. Then, seasons started coming. That, i have to say, had made me hate working at Michaels, especially if you were the closing shift (which i always was) I work PART-TIME and yet would put in about 8 hours of work just closing. Why? Well to sum it up, the store was ALWAYS a disaster, carts and carts and carts of what we call "Go-Backs" were there waiting for us to put back, tons of items left by the customer who returned/changed their mind/didnt put back where there waiting for us every night. Before we could even begin putting those items away we would have to "recovery" our section. One employee had one section, we have about 7 sections. Recovery is going through each aisle picking up items that dont belong there, trash that customers leave on the shelves/floor/in between items. So by the end of recovery you have about one to two carts of more items. Once you're done with your recovery you do your go backs. Seems simple enough, right? Not exactly. You had about 1-3 carts of items you need to put back just in your section ( mind you there are items that are smaller than the palm of your hand that fill MOST of the cart) and these carts were full to almost overflowing. If your were lucky and had an easy section you would finish early, but you were not allowed to leave, you had to stay and help your fellow employees with their section. Which is fine, you wanted t get out of there as fast as you can. Though, you usually left the store around 1 am. If youre scheduled from 5:30-9 (part time) you wont leave at 9... you leave when the store is cleaned. Seasonal you can expect to leave around 1 in the morning. Regular around 10:30 pm.
Pros of working here? Well, the employees are great to work with
assistant managers will help you out with most anything
good starting salary
Cons? Unusual and unexpected closing shifts (as in, you were unsure of when you would be able to leave the store)
the customers!
store manager was not very encouraging and doesnt help you with much
part time doesnt exaclt mean part time.

Michaels Salary and Benefits:
