WORK ENVIRONMENT

strict, high-pressure, bureaucratic, unprofessional

Working at NatureScape:

Pays as well as any landscape company in the area. Equipment and vehicles are maintained better than most places. For a crew member the work week is Monday through Thursday (10 hour days) with occasional Fridays as necessary to due to rain days. Worked very few Saturdays during my tenure there. Four day work week is a definite advantage. Good place to start out for laborers but expect high turn over of upper crew and staff positions. Those on staff will put in many more hours including nights and on Fridays even though they "are not required" to work Fridays. Not a place for continual educational opportunities or training for someone just learning the landscaping trade. This is a business and has very little to do with actual horticulture trade activities other than mow and plant. The company does not lend itself to creative or independent thought. Everything is by the book and so be sure to read the "fine print". Family owned and operated so be prepared to have every motive or action questioned or critiqued by the owners when you see them. If you are not self confident in your abilities to work under high pressure conditions I would look elsewhere for employment. Every company has to make money, take care of their investments and ensure money or time is not wasted but this company will micro-manage every aspect of company operations. Not a place for those who like a little freedom to be creative or show initiative. The owners tend to hire recent horticulture college graduates for key positions and not those who have a several years of experience in the horticulture industry as they do not last as long. Take that for what it is worth. Promotions more common from lower crew positions to upper crew positions but mostly end there. Over all for the money and four day work week it can be a good position for those who just want to mow or plant as part of a crew. For all other positions I would look elsewhere. There are better companies that are successful and take a very friendly approach to their employees. The horticultural industry is a great field to work in and my only concern is that those who are just starting out in this trade should consider all aspects of an organization before seeking employment. Ask around and talk with local professionals such as extension service employees and horticultural teachers. They hear about and know most companies in the area where they work or have former student that were employed by the same. I should have done that just starting out and enjoyed my horticultural education with a company that works hard to maintain good employees.
