Just a part time job for me while I'm in school but I'm proud to earn $8.50 an hour.
This is the perfect place to have a part-time job. Depending on which department you work in you can get a lot of hours. Deli, Bakery, Front End are really strict/busy. Starbucks/Floral are really laid back. Management can be a pain because everyone is under pressure to give "World Class Service".
However I would not recommend this environment for a full time job. After a few years it gets harder to keep up with the BS. Employees are unhappy because they either work too much, work too little, don't get paid enough, rude/crazy customers, lack of help.
But Money is good, so go for it.
Start at minimum wage, department managers get approx $16/hour. Clerks make up to $19/hour. Store manager gets a $#!t load
Safeway knows how to take care of their employees. The benefits are just great. Work-life balance is good compared to other grocers. Safeway is in a tough battle for customers with the big box retailers. Management isn't perfect but they try.
