This company is politically oriented. Abilities mean little. They can be generous with people that play the game, but down right retaliatory with those that don't. Bullying by management is not uncommon. Managers in IT area are also "professional managers" they have little if any IT training or experience. If they do, it is in an area outside of their group.
Turn over is alarmingly high compared with other companies of the same size and type in the area. Turnover is a major issue. In the calendar year 2007, turnover rate within just the IT operations department was close to 20%. Key positions remain unfilled after 12 months. Heavy use of recruiters.
The IT department and HR departments have had allegations of discrimination, violations of the FLSA as well as violations of privacy. Some of which are pending complaints filed with State and Federal regulatory agencies.
Paid time off is minimal starting at 3 weeks (Three weeks include sick time).
Strict enforcement of time off policy requiring accuracy down to 5 minute intervals.
No allowance in time off policy for comp time. (ie. If you work 8+ hours evenings or weekends due to an emergency, you must still work AT LEAST your regular 40+ hour week. Any time off taken to compensate will be charged against PTO without exception.)
The company is cheap. Requisitioning even basic office supplies is a long, complicated affair. Even pens, pencils and paper are questioned.
Funding for projects/upgrades/repairs of equipment and systems is almost impossible.
Skills training is almost non-existant and seems to be used as a reward tool regardless of need. (ie. Helpdesk worker that turns back a week of unused PTO gets a week of "training" in Miami. Systems people who need training to install and maintain new clustered business application told to "deal with it".
